For me as a Sound Engineer EQ and a little and sometimes alot of compression is a given...

When I'm doing Live Sound I love to have a plate reverb and a tap delay... perhaps a couple of gates for boomy drums.

In the Studio when I'm mixing down, I could not live without Beat Detective and a Vocal Tuning plugin of some sort...

Discovered Amplitube 2 a few months ago. Works magic on DI'd bass tracks. But yeah, compression, gate and EQ are a necessity for any drum recording I do. Never played too much with vocal tuning plug ins, then again, I don't record bands for money so I get to pick and choose what projects I take on. If the band is rubbish, I don't usually bother.

Welcome back Goatboy! Its funny you say that... I just find that the vocal tuning plugin works best on the best vocalists!

Amplitube metal. I get a pretty close idea for later when I switch it off & use the track for reamping.

Drummagog for kicks. Metal has an insane amount of 32nd's @ high speed & seeing as I set my 5 overheads to create the majority of the drum sound not just for cymbals I sometimes have to get drummers to track the whole song minus kicks until they nail it again. Then repeat the whole process only tracking kicks with triggers then use drummagog to use the actual drummkits kicks.
My overheads get a hell of a lot of kicks in em, which is good when the drummer does not f**k up, Sounds great, Makes group editing a nightmare though if they are out.

Plenty of other plugs but they are my tp 2 @ the moment as I have been tracking drums & laying down quick guitars to click for our drummer.  Smiley

Oh sh*t how could I forget
ARC
Was sceptical, especially since I spent so much time on acoustics in my room, however the difference is worth every penny.
So much so that everyone I know with a studio wants me to bring it around for a fee & help dial in their room hahahaha.
It doesn't fix modes but it helps to clear some of the fuzziness.
The real proof that it works. My mixes sound much better in the real world & are completed a lot quicker.

ARC. Advanced Room Correction.
IK Multimedia product.
Retails here in Aus for around $900 however I picked up a new version from the states for $500.

No point getting a ripped version as you need the mic that it comes with. Which is a lot of what you are paying for. It is a high quality omnidirectional mic. That also comes in really handy for recording, great for acoustic guitars etc.

You take up to 32 measurements of the room.
Takes about 30 minutes. It uses the Audessey software for the eqing etc.
Not only does it correct the room but it shows you how far out it is & how close to flat it could get the response.
It also tightens your sterio image if it is too wide, too close or out of balance, as it corrects ea speaker individually.
Works as a standard plugin on output usually or output buss
Just make sure you turn it off when bouncing tracks down.

What I really found useful is that I have 3 sets of monitors so I went through the whole process for all 3. Where the graphs were different between the different speakers I could tell it was the speakers @ fault so I left well alone & let the software do it's thing. Where the correction on the graph was the same for all 3, I knew it was the room & went about fine tuning the rom acoustics even further, then re-running the test. As I kept dialling in the room ea time by repeating this process the monitoring just got better & better.

This is a VERY useful tool if applied correctly.

It is also handy if you work in a mobile situation or you want to bring your monitors into someone elses studio, or you are asked to mix in someone elses studio. If nothing else it gives you some idea of how much the room/speakers are colouring the sound of your mix.

Hmmm...might look into that once I convince my gf to let me take over a room in the house as a dedicate place for my gear.

Also, Drumagog = insane

might sound funny, but i stopped using drumagog recently because it didint always get it right... and started to favour Tab pasting in protools instead. I wonder if its just my computer or if it is a setting problem.

I couldn't live without my VSTi Plugins.  Absynth is the one I use the most, but I also have heaps of little indie ones that are a lot of fun.  My fav at the moment is one called 38911BYTES which is based on commodore 64 software.
