Title: Ooooooooo sh*t
Post by: that drummer on October 13, 2005, 02:57:04 AM
Now I'm not the one to normally take an interest in world news, but this one did just hit me a little harder then normal cause it could affect us back here in our little safe haven. No I'm not talking about the depressed guy trying to fly a plane into the sky tower.

Today, I actually listened to facts on the bird flu. Heres me thinking, oh no, bird flu killed 65 people in the world in the last year. Which is sh*t cause more people die in 2 mins in Africa so It didn't hit me hard.

But after listening a lil closer, docters are saying that the bird flu virus is mutating. Like x-men. But in a very bad way. It is mutating at a rate that doctors and researchers cannot keep up. This virus is continuing to mutate and is quickly becoming human tolerable. What does this mean? It means instead of killing birds, the virus will kill humans. How many humans you say? Well, once the virus has advanced to infect humans, it will only be a matter of weeks before it has spread over the entire world.

So how many humans is it predicted to kill if it outbreaks? 150,000,000. In proportion to NZ thats 3,750,000 times the size of our population. If the virus reaches our shores, its expected to kill one third of our population.

This hit me hard as the virus is unstopable and will eventually reach a stage where it will wipe out a signifficant number of humans. They have a vacine that temporaryly stop, but wil take them a further 10 years to create enough to cover just 20% of the worlds population.

Whats everyone elses feeling on this? Do I just need a joint? :(

And by the time they have a vaccine, the next strains will have mutated to a form that will escape detection. I wouldn't worry about it too much bro. Most of us will survive. The immune system has evolved over millions of years to combat viruses which also have evolved over millions of years. The only thing that will drive evolution is environmental pressure. There will be an epidemic, and we will survive it. You should be more worried about global climate change which there is no way of hiding from.

I'm hoping we'll have an escape to mars by the time this world becomes to f**ked up. Mind you. Looks at the weather patterns for the last year over the world...... You can pretty much remake that movie the day after tomorrow......... the ice shelf broke off. Today in the gold coast it hailed the size of cricket balls. Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Hurricanes. Floods. Volcanos.

Thats it, someone pass me the weed  :( :( :(

oh, come on, its all part of a cycle that we can't control. From shipping records the ice was as far back at the poles as it is today around 300 years ago. Global warming, whatever, you can't stop an ice age from coming when it is due... which is not likely for a while (not in our lifetimes or our sons or grand childrens etc), but weather patterns will change as it draws nearer... Gloom doon gloom doom, just live your lives and stop worrying about sh*t you can't control!!

well said,

But while you all live it up, im gonna be hoarding precious crudeoil in barrels in my house in the woods and sit out there with my trusty crossbow, waiting for the first frail humans to come wandering in...then Ill shows you, Ill SHOW YOU ALL!!

I will survive by feeding off the fat people that cant run fast or far enough and I will have enough fuel to keep many fires going. In this man eat man world, I will survive! I will repopulate the earth after the virus has wiped you all out! mwahahaha. All I need is for 3 willing, hot, intelligent young ladies to join me and the world will be saved. Any takers?  :-X I play guitar if that helps...

 :D

Haha, I should get more sleep. >:(  or smoke less :(

unless your one of those people that get sick every week like kristie,

I do f**king not get sick every week.  Everyone gets a cold sometimes.  Piss off.  I hope you get the damn birdflu.

Paul, you can either choose to ignore all the bad stuff that might happen, or worry youself stupid about it, or maybe get together a civil defence kit and tell yourself everything will  turn out ok.

I'm pretty sure that something awful will 4eventually happe, and the pessimists among us will run round telling everyone told you so, untill they die like everyone else   :-*  You're no better off worrying.

in a way you should be freaked about about this bird flu, but in another way you shouldn't.

You should because Auckland is the first place in New Zealand that would get the bird flue and we have 1/3 of the country's population, but you shouldn't be worried because there are measures in place (or will be) to prevent it coming over to NZ.

My sister sent me this...

The Medical Properties of Sauerkraut

Liberty cabbage - Feedback's cure for bird flu
OUR main theme this week is cabbage - and a saga of devotion to the truth
even when it flies in the face of sacred symbols of national identity.
Last year Korean scientists reported that their national dish, the spicy
fermented cabbage called kimchi, cured infected chickens of bird flu. Those
who know the depths of passion and loyalty with which Koreans regard the
dish, which they regularly polish off three times a day, were hardly
surprised. But now, in a flourish of disinterested reductionism, scientists
at Seoul National University report that it is not just kimchi that cures.
Sauerkraut - cabbage fermented anaerobically in brine, but without the
garlic, chilli and Korean identity - has the same healing power.
To those who doubt the whole story, we offer this observation. In Both Korea
and Japan, where kimchi has become a chic food in recent years, there have
recently been outbreaks of bird flu in poultry, but no human cases of the
disease. Coincidence? Considerably better animal hygiene than elsewhere in
the region? Or cabbage? You be the judge.
But this indicates a gloomy prognosis for the Anglo-Saxon world, where
fermented cabbage is widely regarded with horror and only indulged in as a
topping for hot dogs or Reuben sandwiches by a few reckless eccentrics. Are
anglos to be felled by a bird flu pandemic because they are unable to bring
themselves to sample even a French choucroute in the interests of survival?
History, as ever, comes to the rescue. There are perfectly good precedents
for anglos to eat sauerkraut. During the first world war, when Woodrow
Wilson was whipping Americans into a frenzy of anti-German fervour,
sauerkraut - a common dish in the US, given that Germans were the nation's
second largest ethnic group at the time - was not banned. It was instead
renamed "liberty cabbage", rather as French fries became freedom fries
during the recent Franco-American tiff over Iraq. Back in 1917, red-blooded
Americans would no sooner have given up their kraut than their fries (which,
by the way, are Belgian). And you would have had a job getting that
quintessential British hero Captain James Cook to give up sauerkraut. He
insisted upon it, with its remarkable levels of vitamin C, to save his crew
from scurvy. Seems the nickname for Brits shouldn't have been "limeys" after
all.
But those timid souls who really can't face the noble kraut have other
survival options. The Korean scientists say it is lactobacilli, the bacteria
that create the tangy sourness and preserve the pickle, that see off the
virus. So there should be lots of other potential anti-flu foods about, from
properly fermented buttermilk to Kosher garlic dills (the all-salt kind,
none of this vinegar nonsense). Maybe it wasn't the chicken soup that
deserved the name "Jewish penicillin", but the plate of pickles sitting next
to it.

 :(

WE're saved ::)

Eeek

make sure you have a first aid kit and survival kit - drinking water and
canned foods (ok for mum that should not be a problem  ;-P   )  ready just in
case

Prepare for big cyclone, warns MetService
28.11.05 4.00pm
New Zealand needs to prepare for a big cyclone that is expected to hit
during the summer, MetService meteorologist Steve Ready said today.

"Between now and the end of May, nine tropical cyclones are expected to form
in the South Pacific.

"This cyclone season is shaping up to be one where the equatorial Pacific
Ocean is neither having an El Nino nor a La Nina."

Mr Ready said the "neutral years" in the past have seen notable cyclones
such as Gisele in April 1968, which sunk the Wahine, Bola in March 1988,
Fergus at the end of 1996, and Drena that hit in January 1997.

On average cyclones hit New Zealand about once a year, but Mr Ready warned
that "this is the season we really have to be more aware than others".

MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said the cyclone forecast was not affected
by the cold outbreak that has hit parts of the country recently.

"This cold air is just a brief setback to the warming track. The southerly
winds will be replaced by warm northerlies by the end of week, and just in
time for the first month of summer," Mr McDavitt said.
