UP THE IRONS! 1. 'Burning Ambition' - MAIDEN!!! 2. William Blake 3. Killers 4. Fencing! If anyone hasn't seen the Classic Albums DVD about Number of the Beast, I'll lend it to you. Very funny and lots of history on Maiden. 5. 1992 - Bonus: I'm guessing it was... you? All correct, will have to owe 4 applauds Karl got to meet Iron Maiden and got everyone but Janick Gers to sign his Maiden cassettes. Not good form really but I'm sure Janick got over not being asked. Upside, he didn't get to go to the concert, I did.

8. Steve Vai played 'Jack Butler' - I remember downloading the tab for Ralph Macchio's solo and pulling it out at school... - What's troubling is the other members of Alpine Fault have not seen this movie!! 9. Crispian Mills played in Kula Shaker, but they aren't a band anymore. Is this a trick one? 10. Guido d'Arezzo (around 1000AD) but some say Boethis - some Roman fella (around 500 AD) Owe you 3 more. 9 is more laziness than a trick question. 10 I was looking for Guido. Boethius? will have to research that one, there was a writer called Boethius in 5thC who wrote a book called 'Consolation of Philisophy' about his experiences on death row. As you could imagine it finishes kinda abruptly. I wonder if they are one and the same?
everyone should see crossroads.

Yes they were the same person. Boethius assigned 15 letters to 2 octaves' worth of tones around 500 AD. His writings in 'The Consolation of Philosophy' talked about right and wrong putting life and death in 'eternal perspective.' It arguably became the most influencial book in the middle ages.

Interesting. Never really thought if there has been a vhs vs beta scenario with how music is read. So Boethius was the Beta of musical notation. Mind you that kinda would make tab like the dvd?

Karl got to meet Iron Maiden and got everyone but Janick Gers to sign his Maiden cassettes. Not good form really but I'm sure Janick got over not being asked. I come from the same town in the UK as Janick, we used to go and see him in a local pub when he started off with 'White Spirit'. A guy I was in a band with was taught guitar by him and was good mates with his brother Chrissy. Consequently I went out on the piss with him a number of times, good bloke
The stones used to use Hells Angels as security pretty often, but I'm guessing the concert was the free one in Hyde Park?

Close, applaud for knowing Janick. (I would have loved to have met them) It was a concert in the states that was held at a speedway. Grateful dead were also on the bill.

Yeah , absolutely. One of the best live shows I've ever been to.... and the first non-kiwi show I'd seen. I was going to go and see AC/DC in 90 ?? ? with my dad but I don't think he wanted to take my brother and I to that one, we were 13 and 11 at the time.

i know its a bit late for the answer, but the band that recorded more number ones than elvis, beach boys, rolling stones, etc was indeed a session band.
they were called the Funk Brothers, and there was a documentary about them called "in the shadows of motown" a couple years back.
they pretty much recorded every single motown song ever made, and wrote the music for a large box too.
james jamieson was their bassist. one of the best bassists right up there with jaco victor etc. although you wouldnt really think it from his songs, theyre fairly simple.
anyway on with the real quiz!

it would be cool to jam a song and it become number one.

thems cats were bad ass. like cool, only hot. no jive turkeys there. ya dig?

Cozin Jim what are you doing here??
DO NOT DISCLOSE FAMILY SECRETS AND NEVER MENTION HENRY
otherwise enjoy. I will be back in a few weeks and the musical is coming along well. though Mark Ellis might not get its humour.
How are Cozin Myra and Uncle Tyrone? not picking on you too much?

Having a quiet day at work so am putting up some more questions.
1. Billie Holiday recorded a translation of a song (originally Hungarian) associated with many suicides in Hungary and apparently banned over there. What is that songs English title.
2. Speaking of suicide, Name the band taken to court by the family of James Vance over his suicide attempt. Bonus points for album and track.
3. The Beatles have been widely heralded as groundbreaking. Name 5 'firsts' from their revolver album.
4. He turned down job offers from Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith and the rolling stones. He is?
5. as some unlucky bastard is going to win the opportunity of fronting INXS (Yay- NOT), name the album that made them huge stars.
6. Who invented recorded sound and what was the short- lived precursor to the grammophone that bore his name?
7. Name the Scots singer with a 5 octave voice who has worked with Richie Blackmore, Steve Vai and launched his career with a cover of a Bob Dylan song. Bonus points for naming the song.
got some work to do. will check in later.

Im pretty sure that 6 Is thomas Edision. Although I can't think of there being any recording device named the edision or similar.
.. ok, I googled it, it's not Edision, but I won't say who it was so I dont ruin it for others.

4 is not quite German enough, about same era though.
7. has worked with number 4 as well as Vai, Malmsteen and Blackmore. He still performs but mostly sticks to playing in Japan. Lyric clue... " I get the same old dreams, same time every night Fall to the ground and I wake up So I get out of bed, put on my shoes, and in my head Thoughts fly back to the break-up
These four walls are closing in Look at the fix you've put me in
Since you been gone, since you been gone I'm outta my head, can't take it Could I be wrong, but since you been gone You cast the spell, so break it"

beatles question. Backward guitar on I'm only sleeping, twin guitar solo on and your bird can sing, first time an american r & B horn section played on an english track on got to get you into my life, first full on indian sitar on a non indian record, love to you. First time a beatle preformed a song on a beatles album with only one beatle on it. Elenor Rigby. First song openly about dr*gs but not first drug song, doctor robert.
I am so clever.
